The Gym, Edinburgh. Part of the Gym Group this down-to-earth Edinburgh branch is a heaven sent solution for all those who are working crazy shifts (like myself) and looking for a 24/7 open place. This one is clean, safe and has a very affordable monthly price of 17.99 per month, no contract. No joining fee at the moment. It has free WiFi and they just changed the old lockers for new ones, it was a really good move as the old ones were worn out. I changed gym some time after using for 18 years the Centre of Sport and Exercise (CSE Edinburgh University, which is probably the best and most professionally well-equipped gym in Scotland) to annually save 40% of the fee, because is 24/7 and is also properly equipped. The Gym has the right balance of Matrix machines, treadmills, bicycles and free weights. As a non-frills place you need to bring your own towel to wipe machines after using them. Like all gyms, try to avoid the rush hour(s) between 5pm and 7:30pm, if possible as it gets rather busy and you may need to wait for your machine to be freed. The staff and personal trainers are very professional and polite, but bear in mind that the gym is not always staffed. (Monday to Friday, standard staffed hours are 8am-10pm & Weekend staffed hours at all Gyms is 10am-5pm) You can also manage your membership on line which is super practical and easy. Remember that prior to sign up to any gym you need to ask yourself which kind of training environment & routine do you want and/or need, in order not to waste your time and to avoid any disappointments. Recommended.
Not too busy for a city centre gym. Busiest around 12pm and 6pm. Friendly staff and good clean changing facilities. Very close to transport with Waverly train station and lots of bus stops within a few minutes walk. Friendly staff too with lots of classes.
So, I have been thinking how to word this, what type of message I wanted send and I hope it is understood as its taken.First off I had been a member of this place for a few years and loved it for its cheap price, easy access, friendly staff and safe atmosphere and great selection of machines and weights...Then, two months ago now, I had the unfortunate pleasure of encountering an aggressive, foul mouthed individual, who directed their aggression, swearing and homophobic slurs towards me while I was attending this gym. I was minding my business, in no-one's way, but, because I was using a single bench out of the dozens there, I was an inconvenience to this person. They tried to take said bench away, while i was in a mid superset (dumbbell lunges going into a press on the bench). I politely told them was still using it, only to be asked why I couldn't just use another. Before I could comment or even think about why this guy wanted a sweaty bench (I mop down the equipment after use folk ), the man took off into a swearing rant, threw down the bench and then some slurs. He continued to shout about having to drag another bench around. When their newly claimed bench got stuck, he went into a continued tantrum and threw my bench again, this time nearly hitting me and crushing my feet. All the while calling me, and the bench (cause, I Guess?!?), more slurs and using all the swearing. Afterwards, I couldn't focus and grabbed my stuff. I reported the guy at the desk and sent an email detailing what happened.I had consider the gym to be a professional place I could escape to and just de-stress. The worst thing is no-one said anything or came forward to report this guy when this was happening (whether it was fear of the guy or whatever). So if you go to the gym or other public spaces, please if you see someone behaving irrationally, aggressively or even violently please report them if possible and check, that whoever was a victim to this, is okay. This experience was made a lot worse by the fact that no-one seemed to care that it was happening. No one should be allowed to act like that in any environment or even get to use homophobic slurs. The staff were nice enough to hear me out but the customer service folk online have still not gotten back, more than twice, about my pleas to a point i feel belatedly ignored. No reassurance or any follow up on what happened.I have since found a new place to start up at and will not be returning to Gym Group anytime soon.
The main reason why I would recommend this gym to a friend it's mainly because of the price: it's just the cheapest. But more important than that: no contracts. The machines are ok, there aren't a lot of them but there is enough space.Try to avoid the after-office hours. When you register you get a unique 8 digit PIN, it's not that hard to remember.Cons: there is not that much to complain considering the price
Good gym, not many classes available along the day though. Be careful and cancel your membership over the phone with a week in advance or they wont refund your money even if you cancel your direct debit... not refund policy, not customer service satisfaction policy, customer service line unhelpful and do not waste your time writing them, they will redirect you to the phone line. PS. If you cancel your DD, they will cancel your gym membership so better calling them to reactivate it for the month ahead that you have already paid without knowing it.
