I visited The Walnut when it first opened and back then the value for money was second to none. The portions were amazing and a generous plate of food was filled with a selection of meat & veg. The food is as good as it always was but a piece of succulent meat needs to be served with more than just a tiny piece of potato and the pate served with more than two tiny oatcakes for my 20. The homemade bread is always delicious but it is now so thinly cut you can see through it ! Corkage is 5 - my bottle of wine only cost that!
First off, it was a bloody miracle we got a table (no reservation - somebody didnt show up), our party was famished after a long day of travel, and it was close to the hotel. Dear lord, did the stars align. Amazing experience at the Walnut. The three course option (reasonably priced) was an absolute delight and the service staff was attentive throughout the meal. Recommend the toffee pudd.
Small and cozy place with excellent food and service. You can bring your own beverages if you like but we had a nice white wine from the menu. I highly recommend going here, however, you might need a reservation if you don't want to test your luck as we did.
Great food and great service! And not expensive at all! Sunday lunch two-course is 17.5 and three-course is 20. Sunday roast (beef/chicken/veg) is absolutely amazing with a big portion (even only main course is more than enough for one person)! Bread is also nice. One minor thing is that it is a bit smoky inside the restaurant (probably due to all the roasted meat).
Wonderful service, excellent food, amazing value. Is this a loss-leader? Too good to be true but long may it last. I expect the chef and owners to move up town as their reputation spreads and good luck to them. This is a tough business.
