The treatment and support my father is getting is noticeably better than that given in London or southern hospitals. The staff are really good, professional, caring and you can tell there is a good atmosphere and the wards are kept as clean as possible. I would rate them 9 or 10 out of 10 compared with some hospitals in London suburbs that 4 out of 10 would be generous. I visited one London Hospital a couple of years ago and the standard of hygiene was so poor I felt that visitors were at risk of picking up bugs let alone the patients. This is the NHS at it's best.

Came in on Wednesday morning with abdominal pain. Was given pain killers while they ran blood tests. All tests came back clear so was discharged Friday evening. Back in Friday night/Saturday Morning with the same pain. More pain killers, an x-ray, an ultrasound and still no reason found for the pain now being discharged on Sunday afternoon with no treatment for my pain and no reason for it found so fingers crossed it doesn't come back. Or if it does that I have to go to another hospital.

Their minor injuries clinic is far quicker and more accessible than the Royal. If your injury isn't severe but requires treatment beyond that of a GP then I'd recommend the Western General over A&E. The staff were great and very helpful too.

Checked on Maps how busy on Maps and it accurately predicted/reported not busy. So managed to get parked in the free two story on site car park. Service was quick in the minor injuries clinic. The staff were excellent. Liked that it's a nurse led unit.Signage outside the building is good but inside it's really bad. Something that would be simple and inexpensive to fix and much better than asking random staff where anything is, or going into the wrong units.

The most fantastic place. The Western General is the best hospital in Edinburgh, departments are constantly being stripped & sent to the new Royal which is supposed to be a centre of excellence but soon it will be the Royal or nothing becareful what you moan about. I don't mind waiting if my appointment is running late because I took far longer that my allotted time when I was given bad news & I think most people would be the same so remember when you were the one holding the clinic up but now you are well enough to do nothing but moan shame on you.
